Sunderland bolster keeper stocks
With Sunderland boss Steve Bruce looking to bolster his goalkeeping stocks ahead of the new season, with
Scot Craig Gordon still suffering with injury, Westwood is reported to have put pen to paper on a three-year deal on Tuesday.
Gordon’s injury woes limited him to just 15 appearances last term and leave him facing a delayed start to the new season, while 22-year-old Belgian prospect Simon Mignolet is still a way from assuming the mantle of first choice ‘keeper.
Bruce was therefore delighted to have snapped up Westwood on a Bosman signing, with the shot-stopper’s wages reported as 30,000 pounds per week.
Westwood, a product of the Manchester City youth system, spent three years at Coventry where he carved out a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers outside the English Premier League.
The Irishman, however, will not be unveiled at the Stadium of Light until the end of the June when his Coventry contract officially expires.
